Major Cancer Mortality Rate of Cheongju City Residents

Abstract
Purpose: To compare the major cancer mortality of Cheongju City with whole nation and Chungcheongbuk-do, age and sex specific cancer mortalities were calculated by mortality and population data.

Materials and Methods: Mortality data (2003) and population data (2005) were obtained from National Statistical Office of Korea. Age were categorized in 10 year interval. All mortality, all cancer mortality, mortality from stomach, liver, female breast, cervix and colorectal cancer were included in the analysis. Age and sex specific rate of these disease categories were compared with whole nation and Chungcheongbuk-do¡¯s results.

Results: All cause and all cancer mortalities of Cheongju city among 60 years or older age group were higher than whole nation¡¯s and Chungcheonbuk-do¡¯s. Stomach cancer mortality rates of both sex among 70 years or older age group were higher than whole nation¡¯s and Chungcheonbuk-do¡¯s. Colorectal cancer mortality rates of both sex among 50 years or older age group were higher than whole nation¡¯s and Chungcheonbuk-do¡¯s. Liver, female breast and cervix cancer mortalities wers similar to or slightly lower than whole nation¡¯s and Chungcheonbuk-do¡¯s.

Conclusion: Stomach and colorectal cancer mortality of Cheongju city among the elderly were higher than national average or Chungcheongbuk-do¡¯s in both sex, which suggest that the etiological research and public health policy should be focused on this disease in this age group.
